Participating in practicums has given me the opportunity to visit a range of different schools. These schools include all sectors, Public, Catholic and Independent. There is no real contrast in the way the classrooms are presented all have various forms of technology present within the room therefore allowing students access to incorporate technology into their learning. The way the tables are set out for children can be very important in the way children learn and interact with one another. In classrooms that I have visited tables are generally in groups and children are not isolated on their own. This helps children to develop the teamwork skills as they need to work together as a table to get things done. The classrooms also appear to be visually pleasing with lots of learning cues on the walls, colour and children's art on display. Having a classroom that is visually appealing helps students learn and motivates them to get their work done as it is a place where they want to be. Below are some images that I have taken from schools that I have visited.

As mentioned in my blog earlier "My Journey So Far" I had discussed how "EDFD459: The Learning Space" had provided me with insightful information that I had previously been unaware about. Each week I have been able to learn something new and clear any misconceptions I may have had. Below are some of the weekly 'AHA' moments I had over the past few weeks.
The liminal learning space is not necessarily a physical learning space but a psychological space that a student may find themselves in when they have a partial understanding of content.
Once in this space teachers do not provide students with information but students are encouraged to take control of their own learning and become mastery learners. Incursions and excursions are learning opportunities for students that a different to the normal classroom norm. The experience of learning done in this way allows students to work with new people with a variety of different learning tools and resources, therefore making learning more engaging. Allowing students to participate in learning outside of the classroom can provide risks for students therefore it is vital that time is spent on planning what risks are involved and how to overcome these and what can help prevent these from occurring. Developing a checklist for incursions and excursions can help in eliminating risks occurring and planning what is needed for the incursion/excursion.
The image below is my own checklist that I developed for incursions and excursions. The following apps/websites allows for information to be curated from the internet: 1. iFlow - Allows you to follow real-time streams on any topic across the Internet which can be placed into drops of content allowing the user to edit, copy and share. 2. Pinterest - Allows users to collect ideas from a multitude of images using interactive boards. 3. Storify - Allows the user to create timelines or stories through collecting content from social media networks such as Instagram, Twitter and Facebook. 4. Feedly - App allowing the user to browse and share content from news sites, YouTube channels, feeds and blogs. 5. Curation Traffic - Plugin used in Word Press allowing the user to collect posts, graphics, videos, articles and share it in a way that is interesting and helpful. Participating in the unit "EDFD459: The Learning Space" has been quite the journey so far. This unit has been very insightful and helped my concept of what learning involves, specifically online learning, to develop . It has also provided me with the opportunity to participate in a range of activities that I didn't think I would undertake, such as creating my own Personal Learning Network - Teaching Zone.
The idea of undertaking an online unit was very intimidating and overwhelming to begin with and I didn't think I would be able to get through it. Participating in weekly activities has allowed me to develop a number of ideas and steps to follow in order to make the process of online learning less stressful and achievable. Whilst engaging in weekly online activities it was interesting to learn that there are a multitude of ways that learning can take place. Learning does not necessarily have to take place physically within a classroom setting but can take place in other ways, providing students with different learning experiences and opportunities. In this unit there is a focus on six learning spaces that students may find themselves in: 1. Personal 2. E-Space 3. Classroom and School 4. Beyond the Classroom 5. Group, Collaborative & Cooperative 6. The Liminal The unit has so far been very interesting and developed my learning in a variety of ways. I am enthralled to see what the rest of the unit provides. |
